There are generally two types of bamboo flooring: solid bamboo planks and engineered planks. The engineered planks are usually installed using a floating floor method whereby the planks are laid over a thin foam rubber underlayment. Therefore the planks are not laid directly on the floor. It is a quick installation method.
Solid bamboo on the other hand is installed just like any other hardwood flooring. It is fastened down with either staples or nails. This method usually takes a lot of time, more than double the time it takes for a floating floor installation but the result is usually a rock-solid, permanent floor.
Solid bamboo comes in three different kinds:
Flat grain solid strip- This kind of bamboo is usually composed of flat strips of bamboo that are stacked on top of each other and then later on laminated. It is the most common type.
Strand bamboo- Manufacturing of strand bamboo on the other hand, is composed of super thin shredded bamboo fibers which are mixed with resins and then pressed into rock hard planks.
Vertical grain solid strip- This kind of bamboo is made up of thin bamboo strips that are stacked on the edge and then glued together.
Usually bamboo flooring comes in more than 50 different colors which range from soft cedar tones to bright reds and greens even the grain pattern and natural color are rather subtle.
Costs of bamboo floors
When it comes to the prices of solid bamboos, they usually range between $2 and $4 per square foot. Engineered bamboo flooring on the other hand costs around $3 and $7 per square foot. The general basis of prices is often on the thickness of the plank. The thicker it is, the more expensive it costs. Well those prices make bamboo a bit more expensive but you should consider the rather complex process of manufacturing it and the fact that most of it is harvested in East Asia.
Nowadays, flooring warranties are usually an indicator of their quality. Some of the most expensive and best flooring come with longer warranties against defects from manufacturing or any other problem attributed to the company on installation of it.
